Team Paris: We Did It + Won!!

C’est finit, c’est finiiiiiit! Au revoir Paris!

What a fantastic adventure completing the Paris Marathon was! Running 26 miles with 57,000 other people was the most amazing experience and really helped push me on after 19 miles when things got hard! The Eiffel Tower at mile 18 was a great goal to fixate on although when it came into view, it did look a little further off than I’d hoped 😉

But best of all was raising £6,700 for Cancer Research. I’ve been completely overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity which not only made a big difference during my training but will also make a huge difference in the fight against cancer.

Raising such a huge amount means we’ve topped the £5,500 it costs to cover clinical trials to improve surgery for brain tumours for a month, making brain tumour cells ‘glow’ during surgery so doctors can remove as much of the tumour as possible whilst leaving healthy tissue undamaged. This was my dream to cross to honour people like my brother, Matthew, who overcame every obstacle life threw at him in his fight against brain cancer.

It also means we are nearer increasing the survival rate for those diagnosed with cancer – today, half of people diagnosed with cancer in the UK survive versus only a quarter in the 1970s. We are now aiming to see three quarters of people surviving all cancers and with brain cancer victims having a fighting chance. This kind of staggering progress over the years is, quite simply, down to cancer research. And that’s where you’ve made all the difference.

What struck me as the praise flooded in for completing the marathon was a slight sense of bewilderment. Don’t get me wrong, I get that 26 miles is a long way to run and that the training and fundraising takes a bit of commitment. But physical fights like marathons are the easy ones to win. We can prepare for them, we can practise for them and we can run them with others. The end is known and the end is in sight.

Mental fights with no fixed destinations are far harder to endure and often run alone. They take courage and strength of character which borders on superhuman.

But running this together has gone a long way in supporting people fighting the good fight – and it’s that togetherness that makes all the difference at testing times. Just as our family found at the toughest of times.

As Marrow once said,  “quite selfishly, you two help me”. Ironic that for us, it was his strength of character that made it all so much easier to bear. Which is why it’s so important to hang out with the best – to surround yourself with positive people who lift you up – and to always strive to be part of things bigger than yourself. So thank you for being part of something important and for helping me exceed my target significantly. Couldn’t have done it without y’all.

There were many positive learnings from the marathon experience but the one I’d like to leave you with is this:

The Lotus & The Lawyer: How Coaching Can Transform Your Life

I just had a fabulous coaching session with a client who came to me feeling confused and lost about her career path, unable to see options beyond her current professional role and frustrated and drained by her rigid working culture.

She was like a new woman after today’s session, full of energy and excitement about the possibilities that lie ahead. Her whole physiology had shifted, alight with confidence and hope.

Granted, she’s a strong, resourceful lawyer but she’s a great example of what many of my clients exemplify. All of us, whether accomplished professional, tough Army guy or isolated prisoner can feel vulnerable and lost. We can also all achieve extraordinary things when we have the right support. Because once we understand ourselves better, we can create a plan that’s aligned with who we really are, tap into our higher purpose and transform our lives. It starts with understanding and ends with change.

Which is why I photographed the beautiful succulent in the picture above just now 🌴 It reminds me of the lotus flower which is the symbol of fortune in Buddhism. It grows in muddy water, and it is this environment that gives forth the flower’s first and most literal meaning: rising and blooming above the murk to achieve enlightenment.

The second meaning, which is related to the first is purification. It resembles the purifying of the spirit which is born into murkiness.

The third meaning refers to faithfulness. Those who are working to rise above the muddy waters will need to be faithful followers.

So I leave you with these musings:

ii) Think about your issue and forward to a point in time when the issue is as you want it to be. What do you notice that shows you you have achieved the goal? Note it down.

iii) What are you hearing, feeling and seeing that tells you that you have achieved your goal or solved your issue? Note it down.

iv) What are you doing that shows you have achieved the goal? Note it down.

2. LET’S CHAT CURRENT REALITY

i) What is going on right now that tells you you have an issue or a challenge here? Note it down.

ii) What is missing from your current situation that you would like to have? Note it down.

iii) What is happening that is good that you want to preserve to contribute to achieving your goal? Note it down.

iv) What obstacles or possible barriers are in your way that prevent or hinder you from moving forward? Note it down.

v) What resources do you have to help you achieve your goal. What other resources will you need? Note it down.

***REVIEW YOUR GOAL***

Is it still relevant or has it changed? Make any adjustments required now.

3. OPTIONS FOR CHANGE

i) What could you do to move yourself one step forward right now? Note it down.

ii) What else could you do if the world was your oyster with no explanations required to anyone and no financial constraints? Note it down.

iii) What would your best friends suggest? Note it down.

iv) If you secretly know what you should do first, what would it be? Note it down.

v) What is the benefit of each option and which feel the most right in your gut? Note it down.

4. SO WHAT; NOW WHAT?!

i) What are you going to do? List the actions you must go through to achieve your goal. Note it down.

ii) How will these actions meet your main goal? Note it down.

iii) When are you going to take these actions? Note it down.

iv) Who else should know about your action plan and what will telling them give you? Note it down.

v) Whatever your first step is, what obstacle or barrier might stop you from doing it and how will you overcome this? Note it down.

Now DIARISE the springboard to success action plan you’ve dug deep to find and enjoy – because you’re going to watch the stresslift off you as you move closer and closer to achieving your goal and the new, hopeful, inspired you.

Rather than focusing on whether you’re likely to succeed or fail, break success right down into small, actionable goals.

Focus on something specific you want to achieve and feel your confidence build every time you tick another goal off your list and move closer to your journey goal (the big goal each little goal is moving you closer to). Try and see the opportunity of learning in every test/ failure/ challenge along the way. Few of us were born at our best but the best find the positive learning in every difficulty.

So just KISS this week – keep it simple stupid – and see where that takes you…

You’ll be surprised at the results ☘️

And if you find yourself really struggling, ask yourself what your WHY is for pursuing your goal. What’s the underlying reason for going for it? How will achieving it benefit you? How much better will your life be as a result? How much will you care if you don’t achieve it?
